Goodness: How do we fit in and find a standard?

I am fascinated by the Fruit of the Spirit and have been meditating on goodness this week. Will goodness fit the season and expectations of others at all times? God called his creation good and very good when he made us. Anxiety can make us stay up at night wondering if we are good enough musicians, business people, parents, children, teachers or any of the many roles we have.

Today, I am trusting  that He who began a good work in me will be faithful to complete it. Philippians 1:6.

Augustine, On Grace and Free Will, 29

‘For we are now speaking of the desire for goodness. If they want to say that this begins from ourselves and is then perfected by God, let them see how they can answer the apostle when he says, “Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God” (2 Cor. 3:5)’

Here is a link to the music, I would love for you to download it and embellish it with your good musicianship!

If classical music is good or has some measure of goodness it must be taking this goodness from the source of all goodness. Here are a few ideas that show how its goodness is being carried on from generation to generation; even though classical music can be remote and proud it does not need to be. Many musicians in this family tree have gone before us to create beautiful work that helps us flourish and desire to create even more beautiful music for our time.

Gen Z is embracing classical and orchestral music because digital platforms, video games, and film soundtracks have made the genre accessible, cinematic, and emotionally resonant.

  • Short-form videos on TikTok use dramatic classical pieces as an emotional language for storytelling, aesthetic edits, and vlogs.
  • Influencers and down-to-earth musicians share approachable, behind-the-scenes content that removes the “stuffy” barrier of traditional symphonies.

Mental Wellness and Live Experiences

  • Classical music offers a calming, structured escape from the fast pace and noise of digital life, supporting mental health and mindfulness.
  • Modern orchestras are drawing record young crowds by hosting casual happy hours, shorter runtimes, and cross-genre collaborations.
