Dive into Musical History with “Soul Adorn Yourself with Gladness” by Johann Crüger! Dating back to the 17th century, Crüger’s masterpiece has endured the test of time, captivating hearts with its profound beauty and uplifting spirit. Originally composed as a four part hymn, it has transcended generations, becoming a timeless classic that continues to captivate listeners around the world. Sadly, it was in 36% of the hymnals in 1996 but now is only 16% of hymnals! Saddened I had to do what I could to reverse this and bring the beauty of this hymn to the next generation when so many live in “gloomy situations.”
The poet, Johann Franck was a law student at the University of Königsberg during the Thirty Years’ War. Despite the tumultuous times, his religious spirit, love of nature, and friendships with notable figures like Simon Dach and Heinrich Held shaped his character. After returning to Guben due to the war’s upheavals, Franck pursued a career in law but also made significant contributions to poetry, penning around 110 hymns, many of which were set to music by his friend Johann Crüger.
