Your calendar is one simple tool you have for musical advancement and setting priorities. Dream big and plan backwards. One season at a time.
I have such wonderful memories of Eastern Music Festival and Sarasota Music Festival– getting an opportunity to learn orchestral repertoire there as a student raised the bar for my musical aspirations. I think I also made my parents proud by competing for scholarships and making use of my summer vacation to broaden my horizons. But summer seems far away now–in Tennessee, the daffodils are peeking out, and I am looking back at my unfinished Christmas ideas. My sister just sent me a package of letters spanning back to last July! And I rather enjoy seeing how quickly time flies and how one’s current projects keep them busy as a bee.
Let’s be honest. Can you hear the calendar page flipping over in your imagination? We are going to have a lot of choices about how to cultivate music in our lives and they all take time a resources. Do you want to have a time to calm your soul with music? Create musical treasures and commit to serving others with your musical skills?
Take account of your desires, your resources, and your timeline. How long will it take to perfect and get input on that new song idea? Take five minutes today before the new season rushes on without clarity. Write down where you want you and your family to be musically this summer. Doing so will take you one step toward a fruitful and musical season–even though you may feel that the summer sun is ninety-one million miles away from the February frost.
This is the Summer Music Solution I am planning for my students ages 8-14. I know I will benefit from whatever they learn and create this summer 🙂
